SPOKANE, Wash. -- April is celebrated as ‘Donate Life Month.’ It is designed to bring light to the importance of being an organ donor.

A local woman knows that the gift of life means so much more.

Diane Haight was honored by Governor Jay Inslee in April. She received what is called the ‘Gift of Life Award’ which recognizes her late husband’s donation.

Her husband, Ron Haight, died unexpectedly after falling at their home near Nine Mile Falls about two years ago.

Ron was an organ donor and was able to save three lives with his kidneys and lungs.

One of the recipients was a woman who was on her death bed and got a second chance at life because of Ron’s lungs.

Diana said she has had the chance to meet those recipients and said it had given her an entirely different perspective on organ donation.

“Out of our greatest loss came like. It’s their greatest gift. It’s brought a lot of peace, it’s brought a lot of comfort,” said Diana.

Diana is now working to spread the message and importance of organ donation.

According to Life Center Northwest, nearly 2,000 people in the northwest are waiting for a lifesaving transplant. This is just part of the more than 120,000 people nationwide.
