SPOKANE, Wash. -- A suspect threatened to hit a Spokane Police Department officer with an 18 inch piece of rebar Thursday afternoon according to authorities.

Authorities said an officer saw a man trespassing on a loading dock on W. Pacific near Highway 395. The owner of the business has had concerns over people trespassing on the property and asked police to arrest anyone found doing so.

SPD leaders said Benjamin Oien, 22, became confrontational when the officer confronted the suspect.

Officials said Oien pulled out an 18 inch piece of rebar from his backpack and threatened to assault the officer with it. They said he eventually put the metal down but when the officer tried to arrest him he elbowed him in the ribs several times.

Oien tried to spit on officers even after he was handcuffed according to authorities.

Oien was booked for 3rd Degree Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Possession of a controlled substance and 2nd Degree Trespassing.
