EUGENE, Ore. – It may sound like a science fiction plot, but a company is hoping to start a colony on Mars. And a Eugene woman is one step closer to booking a ticket on the first flight.

Mars One accepted applications for the fight, tentatively booked for 2024.

They recently announced that 1,000 people made the first round of cuts. AJ Parsons-Taylor, of Eugene, made the list.

“I decided to apply because creating a human settlement on Mars is just going to be one of the most amazing things that our species has ever done, and I’d love to be a part of something like that,” she said.

According to its website, Mars One plans to send crews of four people to the red planet every two years starting in 2024.

“Human settlement of Mars is the next giant leap for mankind,” according to the Mars One website. “Exploring the solar system as a united humanity will bring us all closer together.”

The first mission is projected to cost $6 billion.
