CHENEY, Wash. -- Spokane County Sheriff’s arrested two people for breaking into a home in Cheney Saturday.
Deputies received a call about a burglary on 15600 block of S. Clear Lake Road. The caller said his neighbor had passed away and his daughter was in charge of the property.
He said he and his son saw a Ford Explorer parked on the property and went to talk to the suspects. They told him they had permission from the owner to be there and they were checking it out for a future rental home.
When deputies arrived, the two suspects exited the home from the back of the house. One of the suspects told the deputies he thought the home was abandoned and said he thought he had a legal right to be there. He said he read something online that said citizens could go onto properties that appeared abandoned, fix them up, and later pay off tax debt owed on the home. The deputy explained that was not true and it was illegal to break into a home.
David Ritcher, 50, and Erin McGovern, 40, were both booked into jail for the felony charge of Residential Burglary. Richter was also charged with driving on a suspended license.
