SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. -- The Spokane County Sheriff’s chopper team helped spot a small plane crash in North Idaho Sunday night.
Air 1 was called out to Cataldo, Idaho Sunday to respond to the plane crash and in order to respond that had to find it first. Crews on the ground had been searching for hours with no luck.
The crew’s only guidance was a witness who reported a low-flying aircraft and then a small plume of smoke.
“They started searching in that area where they thought it was going to be and the plane wasn’t there. So, we kind of had to start over and just start doing a grid search,” said Spokane County Sheriff Sergeant, Dave Ellis.
Air 1 was able to find the wreckage within about 15 minutes with the crews specialized training and equipment.
Right after finding the wreckage, Air 1 immediately went to search for two lost hikers near Liberty Lake.
Over the weekend, Air 1 also helped in several criminal pursuits over the weekend and spotted a wildfire near Fourth of July Pass.
The Air 1 team at Felts Field said they get called out about 85 times a year.
