SPOKANE, Wash. --The Spokane Violent Crime Gang Enforcement Team has been around for 5 years. Fourteen men from different agencies from all over the region teamed up to form the unit to specifically target gangs.
The team is an elite task force funded by the FBI.
Authorities told KREM 2 that the number of gang members the team is dealing with is up but it’s because they’re doing a better job hunting them down. They said the best tool in catching gang members is giving cases to the unit.
The unit said they continue to add success stories to their list by honing in on the root of Spokane’s gang problems.
“The drive for a gang member is going to be money, whether it’s through drugs, juvenile prostitution, home invasion, it doesn’t matter,” said Frank Harrill with the FBI.
The gang unit is also working on their relationship with the Department of Corrections. They’re trying to go on more warrant checks and make sure gang members know they’re being closely monitored by both agencies.
