SPOKANE – Spokane was a big hit with USA Boxing in 2012 for the women’s team trials and now the organization is back in town in full-force hosting its premiere event.
For the first time ever, USA boxing entered a four-year commitment to a single location: Spokane’s Northern Quest Resort & Casino.
“Great hotel, great venue, great community, community support, media outreach,” USA Boxing executive director Anthony Bartkowski said. “It all aligns with what we’re trying to do and we have somewhere to start somewhere and let’s start it here in the great Northwest.”
Between 300-500 athletes started arriving to the Northern Quest Resort & Casino over the weekend. For competitors, this event means it’s time to hammer out who will make the international travel team.
But for Spokane, hosting this week-long event means national exposure, which gives our tourism industry reason to celebrate.
“If they’re competing here, people also learn a little bit about Spokane and when they have a great time they go home and they tell people about it,” Visit Spokane President/CEO Cheryl Kilday said.
The first matches begin Monday at the HUB in Liberty Lake and continue all week long.
