SPOKANE, Wash.-- A child went missing from a YMCA summer camp Thursday, during a field trip to Riverfront Park in Spokane. The mother called KREM 2 On Your Side after she received a startling call from a stranger who found her daughter alone and more than a mile away.
The 7-year-old girl was supposed to be on a day camp field trip with a YMCA group out of Spokane Valley. The camper said her seat-belt got stuck while she was riding the carousel with 29 others. By the time she was able to free herself, the rest of the campers and counselors had left.
“I cried, I was really upset,” said the mother. “I wondered how a huge company like that could actually lose a child, you know, because they’re really reputable.”
CEO Steve Tammaro of the YMCA of the Inland Northwest told KREM 2 On Your Side that the three counselors, assigned to watch the children, made a huge mistake.
“Moving forward, we are meeting with all of our three staff teams, day camp staff teams, to reemphasize the protocols, the importance of them-- headcounts, attendance, missing child protocols-- That’s happening before camp opens tomorrow,” said Tammaro.
