MOUNT ANGEL, Ore. – A Mt. Angel couple was recognized Monday for their 77-year marriage that now ranks as the longest in Oregon history.
Bill and Lola Hinkle got married back in 1935 in Oregon City. When asked about their secret to staying together so long, they said they try to always be open and honest with one another.
Bill, who is 99 now, and Lola, 97, said they are also best friends.
The Hinkles are now living at the Providence Orchard House, an assisted living facility in Mt. Angel.
They were honored Monday by the “Worldwide Marriage Encounter” and celebrated with 50 friends and family members. They offered advice on what they believe were the 3 key elements to their long marriage: Communication, commitment and compassion.
The couple’s 78th anniversary is coming up in July.
