Number of bald eagles on Lake Coeur d'Alene continues to break records

Bald eagles are soaring high above Lake Coeur d'Alene this month.

COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho—Bird is the word for residents in the Coeur d’Alene area this month.

After just a week of breaking the record amount of bald eagles counted on Lake Coeur d’Alene, the record was broke again Thursday.

Idaho Bureau of Land Management spokeswoman, Suzanne Endsley said wildlife biologists counted 372 bald eagles on the lake.

Last week the number of bald eagles counted on the lake was 314, which means 58 more have headed to the region.

Endsley said wildlife biologists weren’t sure what was bringing the birds to the area in such big numbers.

It could be the kokanee salmon population or the early cold that brings the bald eagles here, but nobody is completely sure, according to Endsley.

Wildlife biologists said the peak week for bald eagles in the area was usually the third week of

December. Representatives with BLM said they were excited to see if the number of eagles will continue to grow as the month goes on.

People can head out with representatives from the BLM and Idaho Fish and Game to check out the bald eagles during their event December 27-30.
