SANDPOINT, Idaho – Schweitzer Mountain Resort is welcoming a new addition to its family of avalanche dogs.

In less than a week, the yellow lab puppy will arrive in Sandpoint. She will join labs Annie and Abbey, who were born in the same family.

Dig Chrismer, Schweitzer’s marketing manager, said staff members will decide on a name when the puppy arrives.

The new puppy will spend the summer growing and getting acquainted to her Idaho home before training as an avalanche dog next winter. Chrismer said the process for receiving that designation is a long one that includes many certifications.

She said Schweitzer is lucky to have the dogs, as they help bring awareness to avalanche rescue dogs and search and rescue in general.

“The dogs are fantastic. They’re just great to have around,” she added.
