SPOKANE, Wash.—It seems like there is a holiday for everything, but this one is a pretty “big dill.”
National Pickle Day is observed annually on November 14.
The holiday can be traced back almost 70 years, according to the National Days Calendar website.
Research showed the Pickle Packer Association encouraged the startup of the holiday in 1949.
National Days Calendar also shared a few fun pickle facts:
• Each year the United States consumes 5.2 million pounds of pickles.
• Cleopatra attributed her good looks to a diet of pickles
• Julius Caesar fed pickles to his troops believing that they lent physical and spiritual strength.
Garland Sandwich Shoppe in Spokane also celebrated National Pickle Day.
The shop recently added a pickle sandwich to their menu and saw its sales soar.
Sandwiches are not the only thing being taken over by the pickle flavor.
There are also pickle flavored chips, dill pickle soups and even pickle and pistachio ice cream.
