SPOKANE-- Washington State’s Guaranteed Education Tuition Program.
GET allows families to save for college and avoid future tuition increases.
This year is different than the past, since organizers extended the enrollment period to the last day of May. Typically it ends at the end of March.
Linda McDermott is one of thousands in Washington using this long-term savings plan for her children. Essentially, the program requires her to pay tuition now, at today’s rate, through a GET account. It currently costs $163 per unit. One hundred units buy one year of tuition.
McDermott put her son through college with GET, and she has already invested 400 units, or four years of schooling, for her daughter in junior high.
“The cost of higher education is almost overwhelming, so the earlier you start, the more opportunity your investment has to grow over time. That’s exactly how our experience has been with GET,” McDermott said. “This is one way to help minimize anxiety about financing higher education.”
When your child goes off the college, the investment is equal to tuition at Washington’s highest priced public university. But GET does not require students to stay in state. They can use it at nearly any public or private college in the country.
McDermott said she’s just happy her son graduated without debt, all because they started saving early and planning for the future.
Residents can enroll online until midnight or mail in the form by today.
