SPOKANE -- Police say most weather related accidents are caused by people driving too fast, but some can be blamed on bad equipment, like tires.
Testing your tread is pretty easy, just put a penny in it and see if the tread covers up the top of Lincoln's head, if it does you're in good shape. If not, your tires could cost you a ticket.
We walked through a parking lot with Spokane Police Officer David Presta, looking for bald tires. Most were in good shape, but one cars tires caught his eye. The edge of a penny barely disappeared in the tread.
That driver could be cited for defective equipment, which is a $124 ticket. The difference is just a fraction of an inch, which is all it might take to stop your car on slick roads.
Police say if you cause a crash and bald tires were a factor, you could face a negligent driving ticket, which runs more than $500.
