SPOKANE -- Two East Valley High School girls were seriously injured Tuesday afternoon when the 16-year-old lost control of the Chevrolet sport utility vehicle she was driving and swerved off the roadway and into a large steel power pole.

The Trailblazer struck the pole broadside, trapping both girls inside the SUV.  The 17-year-old passenger took the brunt of the crash and was airlifted to a downtown trauma center.  The driver was transported by ambulance.

Both were listed in serious but stable condition at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit at 6 p.m.

The crash occurred in the 19600 block of East Wellesley about 1:10 p.m. Tuesday.  The girls were eastbound and had just exited Trent onto Wellesley.

As the driver crested the railroad overpass, she lost control on the downhill left-hand curve and slid broadside for about 180 feet before striking the steel high-tension power pole.  The pole measures 17 feet around at the base and was not moved.

The collision spun the SUV around and into the backyard of a trailer at the Timberline Mobile Home Park.  Deputies closed Wellesley until 4:15 p.m. while they measured skid, photographed and collected evidence, and removed the crushed vehicle.

The driver was identified as Katie McLaughlin of Otis Orchards.  Both she and the passenger were restrained with seatbelts at the time of the crash, investigators said.

Investigation into cause of the crash continues.

Well I wasn't slamming you or your age I was merely stating facts that can be found on DOT website thats all. If you took it personally and think I don't care for their injuries your dead wrong. Find some maturity before you post and troll and read the whole post not just pick out the things you want. Listen and learn and let's hope you make it to adulthood safely. On a side note yes, there are bad drivers form every age group. But the numbers don't lie when it comes to what age groups have the highest number of bad drivers. Here is a thought check your facts then speak. And as far as the reason for the accident it could have been any number of things that caused. I was merely stating what was already assumed or posted. Happy New Year.

Reading the story above; I would say there is a lot of speculation in the responses to this article. From the sounds of it, many of you want to condemn these kids before all the facts are in. Being young happens at some point in ones life. Take a moment to look back in time and remember some of the things you've done. I'm 31 (for the record). I'm sure the majority of people driving, at one point or another, have done something they regret while driving. "Accidents" happen. Older doesn't necessarily mean wiser. How many of you have been in an accident? Was it your fault? Were you new to driving? Maybe 20, 30, 40 years old or older. Don't be too quick to point the finger; that could have been you or someone you knew, 20 years ago. Oh and I got my permit at 15 (license at 16)...and have been a proud driver since.

Ok well there are so many thoughts from others about what happened, yes I think they should have a age limit of how many people should be in the car for beginner drivers. Slow down.... you have a SUV, Truck, Van they can slide off the road too!!! Take your time. Atleast these teens are still alive!!!

I will totally agree with Jensen, I am 22 and i will HONESTLY sit here and say that I will NOT and I mean NOT talk or text while I am driving. When Ieave my house my phone get shut off and shoved in my pocket or my purse and does not come back on until I get to where I am going. I will though say that today I was on my way to CDA had to take my car to Parker Toyota the road was slick there was several people that slid off the road into the ditch (probably going to fast for conditions) all of them looked between 35-50ish and most of them were driving trucks and suv's. I had a lady on my rear she looked like she was probably in her 40s.... So yes, there are MANY MANY irresponsible drivers they are not just my age group, they are all age groups especially people driving the big trucks!!!!

Jensen, youre right. Lotsa oldies just like me taligating, driving fast, txting, not paying attention. And it is BS that yr age group gets targeted whne something like this happens. And we ALL should be praying for these girls recovery. Werent no kid but a grown man who was drivng the high-rise 4x4 on his cell at the same interchange not more than a week ago, almost caused me to wreck so yeah, not just the kiddies not paying attention

Lil mr. cooljames, yes Leah is a friend of mine. Obviously she isn't an experienced driver (ie she is 16) and I never ONCE said she was. My mom adjusts her ipod while driving and is 40 so it isn't just young people. Also, the news is wrong I am hearing that she was the driver. It frustrates me how people assume she had to of been playing with an ipod or texting. Maybe it was just a freak thing. I won't say that maybe something wasn't happening like this but I would never say it did either. Lets face it, the population is more able to blame us because we are young. The fact is two girls fighting for the right to live and we all should be praying for them.

Hmmm, statistically speaking lil miss Jensen Driver from age 15-25 have the highest incident of accidents. This is mostly due to inexperience and immaturity. Meaning you aren't fully developed to make the correct decision when needed. Using your cell or adjusting your ipod while driving isn't safe. Sorry it is a friend of yours. However she was just the passenger and not the operator. If anyone had the issues if any it would be the operator. But I know if it was me riding "shotgun" I would make sure the driver wasn't doing anything that could put my life in jeopardy. And just to let you know I am not picking on you because your still in puberty and still learning, senior citizen drivers are the second highest risk category. So basically you drive bad when your young and when your near the end of your time here.

Are you guys really that ignorant? Why would you EVER say such a thing. Just because it is young people, you guys have to act like we are stupid. HOW MANY PEOPLE OVER THE AGE OF 18 EVERYDAY GET INTO ACCIDENTS WITH DRINKING AND KILL PEOPLE?! Maybe they were going a little bit fast sure, but wake up and have some respect! My friend Leah who was the passenger has a broken pelvis, multiple broke ribs, ruptured spleen, and collapsed lung and you think you have the right to sit here and say things? No, you say we are immmature? Who really are the ones acting immature. What if this was your child or friend, things would be a lot different. I am so angry at everyone who wrote something expect spkvllygrl. Everyone else, grow up and act your age it is the least you can do. Try praying instead of assuming things you just don't know.

I would just like to say that the police are not blaiming the girls...... This time of year there are alot of wrecks due to the ice and things like that.... before you start bashing these two young girls (who are fighting for their lives) why don't you put yourself in their parents position. Who are you to say what or how good of drivers either one of them were..... The passenger is a friend of my family and I am praying for both girls to have a normal life after this is done.... Why must we put people down instead of giving words of hope when they are needed most.

And this is why the state should push legal driving age to 18....of course that might not even help....let's try 25.

Another driver that thinks they are among all the other skilled drivers out there that listen to loud music, put on makeup, drink your coffee, read the paper, talk on the cell phone, speed all at the same time. And think "IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN TO ME" I could be wrong they could of been driving 35 mph, listening to classical music (lol) and paying attention to their driving. Hard lesson to learn, hope the girls pull through.

Good grief people... What are people thinking these days, why is this happening every time you turn on the TV or look at the internet.. You kids need to start thinking about other people before yourselves.. I was brought up that there is a consequence to every bad action... So sad that you didn't figure that out before you get behind the wheel of the car.. Thank GOD they only hurt themselves.. Please wake up people and THINK!
