Sniper fires at several vehicles on rural highway

LATAH COUNTY, ID-- Sheriff's deputies have two teenagers in custody accused of shooting at more than 20 cars and trucks.

The shootings happened near the intersection of Forks Road and Highway 8, that's about 30 miles east of Moscow near the town of Deary.

About 1:00 p.m. the Latah County Sheriff's Office got reports of cars and trucks being shot at. Luckily, nobody was hurt.

They closed the road down for about an hour, then this afternoon they arrested those two 14-year-olds after their friends started talking.

"We just started in the area we had some help from kids who lived in the area, they heard about it. It just spread like wildfire," said Lieutenant Brannon Jordan with the Latah County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies say both teenagers are Latah County residents. They've been charged with discharging a firearm illegally. Deputies are not releasing any more information because the suspects are underage.

The shots hit mostly semi trucks so the Sheriff's Office says it won't know how many got hit until they get inspected at the end of the night.

maddjack that was too judgemental and harsh. I'm assuming you either don't think children should be able to talk to their parents or you don't believe it's possible for most everyone to be afraid of my mom.

Explain it to social services mean_mom. I didn't call it in, the kid did. Kids have the control to call in anytime they believe they are being mistreated by their parents, whether the punishment was deserving or not...In the area these kids live in they are trusted to actually hunt by themselves and I know several who do. They made a stupid choice, they get the blame. But I don't know all the facts, if both even did the shooting. I was also scared to death of my parents and when I really needed them, still couldn't talk to them because of fear, my mom still scares me and I'm in my 40's. That shouldn't happen, I should be able to go to her with anything.

re002 There is a major difference between hitting and spanking. Slapping a child in the face, I guess I would have to hear what came out of that mouth. Was that child verbally battering it's mother? Or did the slap come for nothing? Disciplining a child is a major part of parenthood. If you want to tell me that you can "talk" it out. I'm not buying. maddjack - I was tempted by things I could look at when my parents were there but couldn't touch without permission. The reason I didn't touch is fear. I knew my parents would DISCIPLINE me and it wouldn't be pleasant. I knew, without doubt, I would get caught. Having a healthy respect for what my parents could, and would, do to me when I got caught kept me in line.

Fine ke316 that will make an excellent epitaph on the Grave Stone "THEY KNEW BETTER, WERE RAISED BETTER" but we're so sorry they did'nt listen. Again and again we debate blame. Like I said before just disable the gun(s). We would'nt be having this discussion if the PARENTS had done that. If Dad hunts then he knows that leaving a gun accesible to ANYONE in the home is not acceptable. Period!!! I have grandkids and my weapons are locked in a cabinet and they DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE KEYS!!! Maybe it's just too cut and dry for anyone to get. I don't know. Take away the gun(s) scenario and again THIS WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED. Knowing not to "play" with guns when Mom and Dad are around is fine. Were'nt you ever tempted to take out something your parents told you not to play with? I did. But my dad's guns, knives, even his cleaning tools were put under lock and key. I'm sure the family is devastated. I'm confident the Parents won't let it happen again.

okay, so if you want to start pointing fingers about bored kids in small towns...why dont we blame the school too then while we are at it..... all there is to do in a small town is play sports. what if you are not an athlete? no other clubs to speak of at all....you dont play sports...you entertain yourself. im not saying at all what they did was okay - i was in a home with guns.... my dad hunted and had multiple rifles in our home. I never once took them out when he wasnt home as he would have broke my fingers. I have no doubt these boys had the same rules - one of the boys' dads is a huge hunter and his boys know right from wrong when it comes to guns. IT'S NOT THE PARENTS FAULT. Most kids are old enough to baby sit at age 12 or 13 - at age 14 15 you definately know not to play with guns and especially not to take them out to a tree house and shoot at passing cars. THEY KNEW BETTER, WERE RAISED BETTER, and did something completely STUPID.

These two boys come from good, decent homes. They are involoved in athletics, clubs, ffa, 4-h everything. WHy they did something this stupid no one knows. THey are not baggy pants, nose rings, dope smokers and all of the other stereo- typing that has gone on here. THe families are devasted as both of these boys have been through hunters education, hunt with thier fathers etc. Just goes to show that we have no idea what kids are thinking these days.

ke316. When kids get bored and tired of doing the same thing everyday they're going to look for other things to do. You put a loaded and/or an accesible gun in the house and the parents not there or working or whatever what do think is going to happen? You think it's NOT the parents fault? Who do think is responsible? Take away the gun(s) scenario and we have no crime. Sure the kids are responsible but I'm saying if the Parents were a little more careful with their weapons this may not have happened and the kids would be at home and not in jail. KE316 would you feel the way you do IF ONE OF THE CHILDREN HAD BEEN ACCIDENTALLY KILLED BY THE OTHER? It happens. Don't think because this happened in a "small" town that this is not a common problem. Just hope they don't graduate to shooting people instead of vehicles. Remember Lakewood WA????

The charge in Idaho is a felony for whoever thought it wasn't. I wonder how it went for as long as 20 vehicles. That highway does not have that much traffic. As far as hitting a child, that is considered child abuse and the laws are strict in Idaho on that. I know a neighbor that slapped her child and had social services on her door step. We have too many children in foster care now, so don't put more there. Class has nothing to do with choices. The brattiest kids I know come from higher class homes. My own kids are not angels and there are no to very few who may be anywhere in this world. Kids do hear their parents but will do what they want anyway.

If this were my child I would be completely ashamed. I would have to wonder, and agree with others, where did I go wrong? These boys knew how to use their weapons and they obviously were taught gun safety or they would have shot each other instead of 20 moving vehicles. Parents need to wake up and see that when someone says your kid is not an angel, it's your fault in the raising not the kid theyr'e sitting by!

Comment preview: ke381 saidThis is not the parents fault - kids are left unsupervised at 14 just as I was - parents have to work - and in a small community it's common and I guess you'd have to be from a small town to understand. The boys are old enough to know better - again, I was left alone as were most of my classmates at that age - and none of us were off with 22's shooting at cars. I'm sure the parents are extremely upset so people should back off and hold the boys responsible, not the poor parents. It also has nothing to do with "class" - give me a break. It has everything to do with two stupid kids with guns so don't try and turn it in to something it's not. It is what it is and it stinks.

These kids need to be disciplined in front of their peers and all the people in the vehicles they hit. If I had pulled a stunt like this my dad would have blistered my hind end. Not to mention the possiblity of him shooting me in the leg so I would know it's not fun to play with guns! Take them to a morgue and show them what people who get shot look like. Scare the heck out of them. Kids now don't have any fear, of consequences or adults. Their parents take away their videogame instead of spanking them. They can't watch t.v. instead of working to repair the damage. Parents can't possibly spank their child, it would hurt his feelings. I would rather hurt my childs feelings than have him think it's fun to possibly KILL someone else. I would rather spank him today for throwing rocks at people than wait until he tries to shoot somebody!

When I grew up in southern Idaho 14 year olds could take driver ed. and get their day license to operate a motor vehicle. I took driver ed the summer after 8th grade, and drove my '65 Impala to school when I began 9th grade. They say kids today's kids are more mature at younger ages than compared to adolescents years ago. Rrrrrrright. When I imagine 14 year olds today being allowed licenses to get behind the wheel, I shudder at the thought. I also had guns. Received a Winchester 30-30 for Christmas at 13, had my hunting license and shot my first deer (not a CAR) at age 14 in the Owyhee mountains of southern Idaho. The times have most definitely changed, and not for the better. God help us all.

Here's a thought. IF YOU HAVE KIDS, LOCK UP THEIR GUNS. If a parent has guns (which most do) LOCK UP YOUR GUNS. If you can't afford a gun locker then disable the gun(s). Take the bolt out, disassemle the slide from an semi-auto pistol, hide the clips or speed loader. Hiding the bullets won't work. Hey, joey bring over your dad's gun. WON'T WORK!!! And parents, don't hide the parts in the house. Use common sense and take the assemblies with you to work in your vehicle. If all parents would take an active parenting role in their kids safety we would all be safer and maybe the child will live to at least graduate high school. After that their own experiences and good parenting will take over. WE ALL HOPE!

Discharging a firearm is like shooting it off in your backyard, not at passing motorists.. And I stand by my original sarcasm comment of "Sniper? Please.. he's an idiot with a gun". Don't insult marksmen and professional snipers by giving that label to these idiots.

Talk about a rock and a hard place.... Parents need to really impress on their children what is permissable and not. What the teens did was not permissable. However, on the other side of the coin, I am glad they were decent enough shot to hit a big moving target without hurting a human life. Hopefully, these young men will join the marines and put their love for firearms to good use in the war against terrorism and to protect those of us who enjoy having our freedoms of speech, assembly, to bear arms, choice of religion and a fair trial. Many around the world aren't so lucky. Boys, shame on you! Next time stop and think before you act.

Discharging a Firearm? Are you kidding me? It's not the intent that shooting at vehicles is the crime. PEOPLE drive the VEHICLES. These idiots will be released to their parents, maybe juvy till 18. BOY they won't do that again. What a joke. Just remember, guns don't kill people-people kill people. Their very fortunate that they did'nt kill or injure anyone. Their parents better have deep pockets. Their responsible for their childrens actions. The teenagers will get a slap on their wrist and told, "now children don't do this again". I'm fed up with kids doing stupid and sometimes deadly things and as an adult I can't put a hand on them. I'm sick and tired of hearing about juveniles doing this and that and they get no jail time and basically a slap on the wrist or released to their parents. If the parents would have paid a little more attention to their kids in the first place maybe this does'nt happen. Their parents did'nt know that the kids had guns? CANS OR CARS TODAY?

I agree with brightfight. Lets be thankful first of all that no one was injured. There will be many questions of why something like this happened, of course the liberals will blame guns right off the bat. Video games? I personally feel the violence of video games and televesion that some youth are exposed to for hours on end could play more of a part then guns that were not locked up.

Slow your roll on the parent thing for now. They may be F ups but you don't know that for sure. Sometimes loving parents are so busy trying to make a living the kids aren't afforded the attention they need and that's hardly criminal. Yes, the kids should have known better, (little jerks) but kids do very stupid things at that age. This is probably the dumbest I've heard of. Hopefully they were acting out of ignorance rather than malice but we need more details before hanging them or their parents. The kids should be punished to full extent of the law in whatever violation sticks

Well put Harwroc....If you start banning guns, what other amendments will we lose. Gov't has already started on the religion one. Not only that, my son almost died after being beat up, do we ban the feet, hands, knives, bats, etc. just because someone used it to kill someone whether intentional or not, out of maliciousness or accident? Besides, the only people who will then have guns are the criminals because they will still have some way of getting them, sounds like a great idea. There goes whatever freedoms we have. No matter how perfect we raise our kids, they make dumb choices when parents are not around. That's why they have less rights than adults until they are 18 and are classified as little minds that can't think for themselves in many cases. Totally impossible to be with your kid 24/7, 365 days. Passing judgement before knowing facts is harsh, even though I agree with hardwroc's punishment. Kids that go to jail end up going back because of what they learn there.

Perhaps it might just be a good idea to charge the parents of these boys for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Obviously no one is very interested in what they are doing and apparently their upbringing leaves a little to be desired. If the parents were punished alongside the kids maybe they'd pay a little more attention to what their children are doing. If their home situation is really very bad it might be a good idea to consider a foster home. Somewhere along the way these kids got the idea it was OK to do this and they could get away with it. It's time to teach them now (and their parents) that this is not going to work.

Ban all teenagers ! And trucks ! And don't forget they throw rocks too, so , better gather all of them up and lock them up. Maybe just close down the highways and lock up the cars? It may get to be a problem when the groceries run out, but, maybe we can get your permission to walk to the market. This is sounding like another case of extremely bad thought processing by a couple of kids. YES, they need to pay for it, but, hopefully in a manner that will TEACH them the lesson without making it worse. Lots of public service and face to face apologies and monetary damage repayment, and some probation would likely make a positive difference. A few years in the lock up will teach them burglary skills and add to their confused view of the world. Guessing wildly from the distance at least.

When you are of that age and live in Idaho around guns, ur parents teach you what they do and the things that they can cause. What was going through their heads? And why were they not in school? They really could have hurt "ANYONE" meaning kids, parents grandparents or even their class mates. They really need to be punished for this and realize the consequences.

Jack Buelle's office (the trucking company out of St. Maries) is reporting over 20 vehicles damaged. This information was available to the KREM2 reporters if they were listening to the local police via scanner. I'm assuming that's where they heard it, because that's where I heard it. I'm not sure if they have anyone in custody, but it does sound as if they know who is responsible. The person is from Deary and they were interviewing them earlier this evening.
