MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. -- Criminally insane killer Phillip Paul will be leaving Eastern State Hospital Friday for a hearing in Yakima, where a judge will rule on his conditional release from prison.
Public defender Dan Fessler said Tuesday he is not the one asking for this hearing. Instead, it is a review of Paul's living situation that was scheduled months before he escaped from his caretakers at the Spokane County Interstate Fair.
The hearing on Friday will determine Paul's future at Eastern State Hospital. It is possible, but highly unlikely, that Paul could be released.
He has, in the past, lived at the Carlyle Hotel in downtown Spokane. It is also possible the judge could impose stricter rules on Paul's status at Eastern State Hospital. Fessler said he has not filed a petition for release, but would not elaborate on Paul's desires.
KREM 2 did not hear back from the Yakima County Prosecutor's Office. Paul is expected to be at the hearing, which starts at 9:00 a.m. in Yakima.
