PULLMAN-- For the first time, the attorneys for Kristen Grindley’s boyfriend are speaking out about the investigation.
Grindley is recovering at a Spokane rehabilitation center nearly two months after being found bleeding and unconscious on a Whitman County roadway.
Roger Pasma’s attorneys are comparing the November 11th incident to what they say is a similar deadly accident involving a sports star last month.
They also believe Grindley’s testimony will clear Pasma’s name.
This is the statement sent to KREM 2 News late Wednesday from Pasma’s attorneys.
QUOTE:"We are very happy that Kristen Grindley is recovering from her injuries...We believe that her ability to accurately recall the events of that evening will clear Richard Pasma of any criminal wrongdoing. We are mindful of the facts surrounding the death of the Cincinnati Bengals' Chris Henry, who fell or jumped from the bed of a pickup driven by his fiancée. Mr. Henry's death was ruled to be accidental, and no charges will be pursued against his fiancée. We are hopeful that the same caution will be exercised in the decision to bring charges against Mr. Pasma."
Pasma is the only person of interest but hasn’t been formally charged with anything.
Whitman County Sheriff Bret Meyers says he got word of the statement the same time KREM 2 News did, and was certainly surprised at what the attorneys had to say. Sheriff Meyers says looking at the new statement, one could infer there is no way he didn’t know she was in the back.
Meyers says the statement certain shows inconsistencies with Pasma’s story. The only statement Pasma gave to investigators was during the night of the incident on November 11th.
In it, he says Grindley and he were fighting at their house on College Hill and that she was not with him in his truck when he left to clear his head.
He did admit to driving on the same rural road that Grindley was found on, and even searched for her on campus when he says she disappeared from home.
Pasma was not at his last known address on Thursday when KREM 2 News knocked at this door. His attorneys in Pullman said they had no comment.
Evidence lab technicians think scuff marks on Grindley’s clothing may match Pasma’s truck, which the Sheriff said could also prove that someone had to be aware she was in the truck but kept going.
