SPOKANE-- A priest at Gonzaga is among thousands of people who still don’t know if their loved ones survived the earthquake.
Now the university is responding to the tragedy.
Father Craig Hightower’s niece recently graduated from college and immediately headed to Haiti to work in an orphanage.
Molly Hightower was in a building on the property before the earthquake hit. That building collapsed and Molly hasn’t been seen since.
Those who have contacted her family say all of the orphanage’s volunteers have been accounted for except Molly. One person was killed, several more were injured.
Father Hightower has been with his family in Port Orchard, Washington waiting for word.
In the meantime, fellow priests and university leaders are doing what they can for the relief effort, raising money and planning drives for needed goods like food and clothing.
Most of Haiti’s population is catholic and one Father says thousands of missionaries and volunteers have been in the country for years, so the catholic community is expecting some of their own will be among the dead.
