MEAD, WA. -- According to the brother of a North Spokane County murder victim, the couple's son witnessed his father murder his mother.

Police say Jeff Canino, 46, is now in satisfactory condition, after stabbing his wife, Michelle Canino, to death Wednesday in their Mead home and then stabbing himself.

Police say when they responded to two 911 calls from the home, the Canino's 11-year-old son answered the door with cuts to his hands.

Mike Mettler is Michelle Canino's brother. He says his nephew was waiting outside the house for Michelle that morning, ready to go to the doctor for oral surgery.

"When she didn't come out, he went into the house to see what was wrong and that's when he discovered her," says Mettler.

Police believe that's when the boy made the two calls to 911. Mettler says the boy also struggled with his father, causing his hands to be cut.

The boy was taken to the hospital and released to his grandparents.

"I think he's handling it as well as an 11-year-old can be expected to handle it," says Mettler.

Jeff Canino is still hospitalized, but has been charged with first-degree murder for Michelle's death.

According to Mettler, he believes Jeff was recently troubled by the possibility of losing his job at a local car dealership.

what, exactly, is a loser? Seems like the boy and the mom are the ultimate "losers" in this situation. Family memeber and friends who have to pick up the pieces of this situation - they seem like the "losers" if you ask me Suicide is a very selfish act, isn't it?

What I have learned from this whole situation since in this case I know the perpetrator, is to no longer judge anyone when I hear of cases like this in the news. Jeff is the last person I would have ever expected this from. He was a loving father and husband and worked hard to make sure they had all their needs taken care of. I am shocked and heart broken over what Jeff did, and devastated for his wife and son and all their family and loved ones. I continue to pray for peace and healing for everyone involved.

If you read the info they have on kxly.com, it'll be come clearer that fear of job loss (which Jeff had for a very long time) was not the only emotional crisis he was dealing with as of late. Regardless though, no emotional crisis justifies murder/suicide. The fact that this act caught his closest friends and relatives by surprise, it goes to show that he was by no means a 'loser', and is a genuinely nice guy who happened to reach an emotional snapping point and do the unthinkable and unexplainable. My wife worked with him and when news of this incident emerged, she was quite surprised, greatly saddened, and stunned with disbelief. She doesn't feel that way about 'losers'.

Been unemployed since May, its not the end of the world. Thank god for Unemployment. Its been just a Long Term vacation, doing things you wouldnt normaly get to do, spending time with friends and family, which takes way negative thoughts of not being able to find a job. Unemployment treats you pretty well, Why this man had to resort to killing his wife, live life one day at a time, dont worry about tomorrows troubles. My thoughts and prayers go out the little boy and the rest of his family.

noyankeefans: before you judge people maybe you should consider the fact that you do not have all of the information and you do not even know who you are talking about...sorry to say it but the news does not always get everything right

I don't get why people think its the end of the world if/when they lose their job! My husband has been unemployed since May and still can't find a job, but that is why they have the unemployment and the extensions. It may not be a fun thing to deal with but with the state of the economy there isn't much out there and it's times like this that we just need to all stick together and be a little more supportive. My prayers are with this little boy and the rest of the family!!!!
