East Valley School bus crashes into tree

SPOKANE VALLEY -- An East Valley school bus with children on their way to school slid off an icy road near Newman Lake and hit a tree.

It happened north of the intersection of Trent and Harvard at about 7:30 Wednesday morning.

Emergency crews told our crew on the scene one student suffered a minor injury, and was treated at the scene.

The bus slid off in treacherous conditions that made it difficult for emergency crews to access the scene.  Firefighters used four-wheel drive vehicles to transfer students from the accident side to another bus.  Parents picked up some of the other students after the accident.

i was on that bus as well and actually the transportation supervisor was stuck on that same road and we passed him right before the crash. so it was being checked but to late for us

I have no doubt that the driver of that bus was going slow enough. I'm certain he/she is beating themselves up over this. That fact of the matter is that road should not have been open for buses. The transportation supervisor should have checked that road before school even opened, and closed it for picking up students. Did he? I'm certain that no one will get the answer to that. Did you know they have hidden the bus that was involed in the accident.

We are one of the routes that they closed the road for the buses. They just got a late start so a few buses made the routes before they were closed. Unfortunately for the bus driver who hit the tree. I am sure he/she was very sorry that this happened and cant really see that they would intentionally drive too fast in this conditions, so please dont jump to conclusions I am sure they are punishing themselves enough already. I had to drive my 2 kids to school and our dirt road was so icy that one of the buses slid off the road into a ditch just past our house and he was going very very slow and we saw it happen with our own eyes. He was also one that had already got onto the road right before the closures. I had to take an access road because I could not get down the 1 mile stretch of road to get to Idaho road so I can see how some of the incidents today just were not avoidable.

Did anyone ask the Transportation Supervisor if he drove the bus route before school started this morning? If he had he would not have allowed any driver up that road, with or without chains. I understand the driver had only a couple of weeks experience, if that is the case, why was he on that route, in the winter. Did anyone ask who assigned the inexperienced driver that route?

to 12/16/09, i was on the bus that crashed i am a EVHS student. The bus was not going way to fast the picture was given credit to the wrong person Garrett Clark should get the credit. It was scary I'm not going to lie but i do know that the bus station needs to be better at calling parents. More than one person was hurt because i know several people who did go to the ER. It was horrible but its not the bus drivers fault.
