FORT HOOD, TX-- The attack at Fort Hood, Texas left 13 people dead and at least 30 wounded.
Among the wounded was 18-year-old Private George Stratton from Post Falls, Idaho. 32-year-old Army Reservist Jeannette Jurroff is credited with saving Stratton’s life. She says she was eating lunch when she heard gun shots. A co-worker of hers came running into the room telling her someone was shooting. In the course of 20 minutes, Jurroff found herself running and hiding for her life, then trying to save the life of another. She was in a conference center trying to dial 911 with shots ringing out in a building close by. Officers started to bring wounded soldiers into her building. Jurroff says she spotted Private Stratton laying on the ground. A medic was trying to stop the bleeding in his shoulder from a gunshot wound. She says she walked over to Stratton and asked how he was doing. She says he was in and out of it. She says his neck looked like it was made of Jello and his eyes were rolling back into his head. Jurroff says she talked to Stratton to try and keep his mind off the injury. They didn’t have to wait long for the wounded to be taken outside to an ambulance. At one point, Jurroff found herself alone with Stratton, waiting, when they heard more gunshots and a voice telling everybody to run for cover. She says there was no way she was going to be able to carry him so she started yelling at him to move. The two went inside an administrative building. Jurroff says she tried to hide Stratton under a table with a blanket draped over it. That’s when EMTs arrived and took Stratton away. Private Stratton has since been released from the hospital.
