SPOKANE--When it comes to your teeth, it turns out that not all candy is created equal.

Dentists say that chocolate is actually the best for kids when it comes to preventing cavities because it doesn't stick to teeth. Candy like Starburst, Sour Patch Kids and Twizzlers are among the worst. Anything sour is very acidic, which can errode the enamel on teeth. Dentists say that the combination of sticky sugar and acid are about as bad as it gets. Hard candies aren't much better--sucking on them concentrates the sugar in one spot causing tooth decay. Whats more, if kids bite down on hard candies like Jolly Ranchers, they can potentially rip out fillings or damage braces. One night of candy won't ruin your smile, but dentists say it's best to keep the candy in moderation and make sure to brush and floss.
This Halloween dentists are trying to help reduce sugar consumption and are willing to put their money where their mouths are. KiDDs Dental offices are exchanging cash for candy. You can bring your excess candy to any location between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. the day after Halloween and get one dollar per pound. The candy must be unopened. All the treats collected will be shipped to troops overseas through Operation Gratitude. Click on the link at the top of the story for more information.
