MERLE HAGGARD TAKES A TRIP DOWN MEMORY LANE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Merle Haggard, who recently turned 75, says "it's been an interesting life, to say the least." The Bakersfield, California, native took time out of a busy week to tour the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's new exhibit, the Bakersfield Sound. Haggard says the difference between the Bakersfield sound and the Nashville sound of the 1950s and 60s was barrooms. Nashville was about church music and Saturday night at the Grand Ole Opry, but Bakersfield was about beer joints with bands. He says Bakersfield's hillbilly music was electric and "probably did more for the sale of Telecasters than anybody in the world."
