HGTV's Chip and Joanna Gaines: 'No cell phones for our kids'

Chip and Joanna Gaines host HGTV's number one home improvement show "Fixer Upper", but despite their success, the couple remains grounded and takes a hands on approach to parenting their four young children.

The family doesn't own a television and their kids probably won't even have a cell phone.

"I tell the kids that you are probably not going to get a cell phone," Joanna told Entertainment Tonight. "We want to teach our kids that life happens outside of these devices. Sometimes it's just a simple thing to go outside and connect with nature, play with your friends and get dirty."

Chip and Joanna Gaines, the show's hosts, flip old or dilapidated homes in the Waco, Texas area. Chip handles construction and Joanna manages design. Their work has become wildly popular, and in Texas, they are local celebrities. The couple only works in Texas.

In a recent interview with People Magazine, Joanna said they were broke before "Fixer Upper". 

"The only money we had was what was in Chip's pocket," Joanna told PEOPLE.
