LOS ANGELES -- Portland jazz bass artist and singer Esperanza Spalding took home two Grammy awards Sunday.

Spalding won for Best Jazz Vocal Album for "Radio Music Society."

She and trumpeterThara Memory won for Best Intrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists, for the song "City of Roses" which is on the "Radio Music Society" album.

The instruments in "City of Roses" were played by Memory's high school students in the "American Music Program," which trains students in classical American jazz music.

“It’s kind of a surprise to me," he told the L.A. Times, "The fact that we did use students with this arrangement, I cheated and I love it.”

Spalding won a Grammy two years ago for Best New Artist, beating the heavily-favored Justin Bieber.
