COLFAX-- The Colfax Fire Department responded to a structure fire Tuesday afternoon.  A local cabinetry business caught fire on Main St. in Colfax near the north end of town.

Fire crews from the City of Colfax and members of the Colfax Volunteer Fire Department began the initial attack on the fire.  Mutual aid was requested from the City of Pullman, Whitman County Fire Dist. 12 (Pullman), and Whitman County Fire Dist. 11 (Colfax, Steptoe, Albion and Diamond).

At about 1pm there were 35 firefighters on the scene as well as 9 pieces of apparatus including two ladder trucks.   There are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The business, Mitz’s Cabinets, appears to be a total loss after the roof had collapsed.  However an adjoining building and business appears to have been saved.  Crews continue to pour water on the structure.

At this hour Main St. / SR 195 through Colfax remains closed to vehicle traffic at the north end of town.  The road is estimated to reopen sometime late tonight.   Due to other nearby road closures related to weather conditions, motorists are advised to avoid Colfax if at all possible.
