SPOKANE -- An emotional reunion for a single Spokane father and his nine-year-old son. Joseph Meyers just spent ten months serving overseas in the Navy. On Friday, he gave his son a huge surprise inside an All Saints Catholic School classroom.
Friday was just another day inside a third-grade classroom. But for a nine-year old sitting in the front row, it's a day he will never forget.
Ten months ago was the last time Operations Specialist First Class Joseph Meyers saw his son Eric. Joseph is in the Navy and has been overseas in Kuwait for his third tour of duty.
"My family has been an important part in this. It has been every part in my opportunity to serve something greater than myself," said Joseph.
It is the longest time he has been away from his son. And in one moment, the door opened and Joseph surprised his son. They embraced and shared a moment ten months in the making. Joseph admitted it was hard being so far away. He missed Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other special days.
"I know I wasn't there on your birthday. So I wanted to do something special. I flew this flag for you on your birthday," said Joseph.
Joseph said in tough times, his son was his strength and his reason to press on.
The class got a taste of the sweet surprise as well. There were cupcakes compliments of Eric's dad.
Joseph Meyers isn't certain if he will be deployed again. For now, he is just ready to relax and spend precious time with his son.
