SPOKANE-- Spokane firefighters battled two house fires in the early morning hours of Saturday. The first broke out around 12:30 am on the 1100 block of west Fredrick Avenue.

Firefighters say that first fire started in the kitchen after the homeowner left  food unattended on the stove. The home has heavy smoke damage. The homeowner is staying with relatives. The damage is estimated at $10,000.

The second fire started just before 2:30 am on the 1700 block of east 40th Avenue. That fire started in the bedroom. The homeowner suffered burns to both hands and one arm. He is now at Sacred Heart Medical Center recovering. His cat did not make it out alive.

Firefighters were on the scene for about three hours. Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused the second fire. Damage is estimated at $10,000.
