KREM 2 supports Rachel’s challenge; a campaign dedicated to increasing kindness in schools.

The "Sterling Savings Hero of the Month" is a chance to recognize random acts of kindness that make our young people heroes.
This month's hero is turning her fear into a chance to help others.

Until a few months ago, 13 year old Chelsea Nelson had never been to Spokane's Shriners Hospital. These days, she and her mom visit frequently.

In September, while getting a physical to play sports, Chelsea's doctor discovered she has Scoliosis.

Chelsea wears a brace to help straighten her spine. Its fun colors almost mock the insecurities it created.

“Well, middle school is very... Uh, you get judged on how you look so I was very scared about if people were going to look at me differently” Chelsea told us.

Over time, Chelsea’s learned to cope. She knows there are other girls wrestling the same insecurities. “So I thought if I started a group it could be a support group about having Scoliosis and it's not a bad thing and it's okay."

Chelsea turned thoughts into action. She’s launching a new Spokane chapter of a national support group called "Curvey Girls".

Sally Mildren is inspired by the way Chelsea is transforming fear into something exceptional. "She took that and converted it into something to help others.  And even today she was telling me ‘I’m going to make a difference and I’m going to make this world a better place.’  And that kind of spirit is just a hero to me if you're 9 or 90."
After talking with Chelsea, you begin to see that spirit and you realize whoever takes her hand on this journey, will be lucky to have her at their side.

"We can talk about fashion and we can talk about how to cover it and how you don't need to be treated special for it" Chelsea said.

Chelsea’s first meeting is scheduled for this Saturday at 1:00 at the "Roller Valley Skate Rink" in Spokane Valley.
