LIBERTY LAKE, Wash.--
KREM 2 News is starting a new series of reports that will support Rachel's Challenge, a campaign dedicated to increasing kindness in schools.
The series is called the Sterling Savings Hero of the Month and it will recognize random acts of kindness that make everyday people heroes.
A wreck along Highway 2 near Airway Heights was the setting of our first selection.
Alisa Morrison was headed to work along the highway on an icy morning in November when the car in front of her started slipping out of control.
"When I started pulling over I felt my van kind of float and the next thing I know I hit this power pole and came to rest in a field,” said Alisa.
Alisa didn't even realize it at the time, but her van had actually rolled. The front windows were broken out and icy air was blowing in.
"I was so scared,” said Alisa. “So then I felt this hand on my arm, kind of rub me and he says, ‘Are you okay?’ And I said, 'No, I don't think I'm okay’ and I just started crying."
Jason Bruce is an EMT for the Washington Air National Guard. He was on his way to work when he saw Alisa's minivan ahead.
"I saw headlights and then taillights and then headlights and then the headlights were upside down. I thought, something bad just happened," said Jason.
"Nobody stopped,” said Alisa. “Except for him, he stopped."
Before emergency crews arrived Jason crawled inside Alisa's van and held her neck straight to keep her from injuring her spine.
“He was so kind and so nice and I was crying and I know my tears were running down his fingers and his arms and I kept apologizing,” said Alisa. “He said, “That’s okay, everyone will be here in a minute.’"
Alisa suffered a concussion in the crash. But she gained a hero, which is why she nominated Jason as the Sterling Savings Hero of the Month.
Jason is humbled and happy to learn Alisa is healthy and full of life this holiday season.
"It couldn't have ended better, she gets to have Christmas,” said Jason.
Coming up in 2012 KREM 2 News and Sterling Savings want to continue this series, this time focusing on all the amazing young heroes out there.
If you know someone between the ages of 13 and 24 who is a hero to you let us know. Click here to nominate a young person.
