Spring officially arrives this Friday March 20 and for many folks its been a long wait. We've had back to back difficult winters with record snowfall last December and now it looks like the winter of 2008/09 will go down as the 3rd snowiest winter in history. 89.4" of snow so far this season is about twice the normal snowfall for Spokane. Last winter was the second snowiest with 92.5" of snowfall and the record is from the winter of 1949/50 with 93.5" of snowfall.
So its hard to fault anyone who welcomes spring with open arms and sheds no tears for winter fading into the history books. But before you get your hopes too high, remember our Springs, March, April and May can be cool, wet and windy. These rains are good for our soil and our snowpack. In the meantime get out the seed catalogues and plan your garden. We'll be putting in the tender plants by the middle of May. I can't wait.
