30 second game guide

Bring’em Out: San Diego Toreros 4-17 (0-6 WCC) vs. Gonzaga Bulldogs 13-8 (3-3 WCC) at the McCarthey Athletic Center at 5 p.m.

Watch for: The unthinkable losing streak to come to an end. This time, I’m fairly certain Gonzaga will find a way to win. The Bulldogs suffered their third-straight WCC loss Thursday to a team that just played better basketball. You have to go all the way back to 1997 when Dan Fitzgerald was at the helm to find three consecutive conference losses. Thankfully, winless San Diego comes to town to rescue the Zags who need a win in the worst way.

Fear: A close game. The Bulldogs’ confidence has been hit harder than it has in over a decade. If the Toreros are able to keep the game within single-digits, we could be looking at another pull-your-hair-out finish. USD head coach Billy Grier knows the Zags’ offensive and defensive schemes (from his days as a GU assistant), but lacks the talent to do anything about it. It’s time to leave it all out on the court if you’re Gonzaga and play like there’s no tomorrow.

Respect: The beastliness of Sam Dower. Watching this freshman take over the game for a five minute stretch in the second half against the Gaels Thursday night was truly exciting. Not only did Dower single-handedly pull GU back into the game, (and into the lead briefly) but he gave us a glimpse of the future of Bulldog basketball in the post. Dower connected on six-of-seven shots including a three-ball in a pressure-packed scenario. I’d love to see this kid get more minutes and free up the outside shooting game.

Random Stuff: Gonzaga has a 25-game winning streak over San Diego in regular season play. The Bulldogs lost just their second game in 46 tries at the McCarthey Athletic Center Thursday to Saint Mary’s.
