30 second game guide

Bring’em Out: Gonzaga Bulldogs 15-9 (5-3 WCC) vs. Loyola Marymount Lions 9-15 (1-8 WCC) at Gersten Pavilion at 8 p.m. on ESPN2.

Watch for: How badly the Zags want that second seed in the WCC Tournament. That’s right, Gonzaga’s all but seen an 11th consecutive WCC regular season title fly out the window, so now, it’s time to focus on the conference tournament. That means, the only thing Gonzaga has left to play for, is tournament seeding. Sitting tied for 3rd place with Santa Clara (who currently owns the tie-breaker), the Bulldogs need to win-out in order to claim the number two seed (including a victory over USF next week) and an automatic birth in the semis. We’ll see if GU plays with the necessary sense of urgency on Thursday.

Fear: Robert Sacre. He burned the Lions for a game-high 18 points on January 15th in an 79-59 win in the Kennel. I can guarantee Big Rob is sick of coming out on the wrong end of basketball games in a Gonzaga uniform. It’s only a matter of time before Sacre pulls this team up by its bootstraps and gets it to play at the level its capable of. Hopefully it comes following that loss to Memphis.

Respect: The dynasty Gonzaga’s built for itself the past decade. Just because the Bulldogs probably won’t win the regular season title, doesn’t mean they won’t be dancing come March. There’s a reason GU’s managed to punch its ticket 11 straight years, so don’t count the Bulldogs out until the committee doesn’t call their name.

Random Stuff: Gonzaga has won 31 of the last 34 meetings with the Lions, with the only losses coming last season, and in ’07 and ’03. LMU is tied with the worst record in the WCC at 1-8. The Lions received a first-place vote in the pre-season coaches poll.
