SPOKANE-- The Mead School District in Spokane County opened a new, innovative school Tuesday where students work with iPads instead of textbooks.

The new school is located in the University District at the Riverpoint Campus.

The new Mead School District Innovative School was started when officials were looking at different, better ways of education according to Assistant Superintendant Dan Butler. He said the district came up with the Stem External School where the curriculum focuses heavily on science, technology, engineering and math.

Bio Med is the cornerstone, along with language arts and entrepreneurship. Coursework in integrated, rather than split into a six period day.

There are 75 spots.  Students are split between Mead High School and Mount Spokane. The district selects those interested through a lottery system.

The Riverpoint Academy has community partners with WSU, Community Colleges of Spokane, Eastern Washington University, and Greater Spokane Incorporated.

Students also do an internship with career professionals.

The school is designed for high school juniors and seniors. It's funded through the state at the same level of the other high schools.
