Over the past several weeks, Wendy Needham has been doing a lot of heavy lifting in order to get financially fit. Her United Health Service Credit Union Coach Gayle has been providing the guidance, but it is up to Wendy to reach her goals.

The single mom says she and her two teenage sons, C.J. and Jake have been cutting back whenever they can. This week, they’re implementing the “Envelope System.” Two weeks worth of money for groceries, school supplies and clothes. When the money it gone, they are done spending.

And Wendy is restricting her spending even further. She is saving $120 a month in parking alone now that she is taking the bus to work, plus another $60 in gas, giving her a total month savings of at least $180 a month.

She also eliminated the extras in her cell phone plane and got a smaller garbage can because her family never filled up the larger, more costly one. And for the first time, she’s whittled down her Macy’s card to a zero balance.

Eliminating that, along with the cell phone and garbage reductions and Wendy is saving another $126 each month. Add that to the $180 she’s saving by taking the bus and that brings Wendy’s cost cutting measures to $306 each and every month. It’s such a success, Wendy says she’s even starting to love saving money more than shopping.
