Avista and STA partnering to give free rides to cooling centers

The free bus rides are effective immediately and will be offered through Friday.

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Transit Authority and Avista Utilities have partnered to provide free bus rides to people who need to go to cooling centers.

This free, door-to-door service will be effective immediately and go through Friday.

Those needing the free service can call (509)-328-1552 with at least two hours of advance notice to schedule trips to and from a cooling center.

E. Susan Meyer, STA’s CEO said they are providing the rides because the effect of the extreme heat on the health of the community.

“STA has the vehicles and the operators needed to get people to safety, which makes us well-positioned to assist Avista in its relief efforts.”

Avista’s Vice President for Community Development and Economic Vitality Latisha Hill said Avista is committed to providing support to the most vulnerable in the community. 

“Our partnership with STA will enable those who are struggling through this unprecedented heat wave to find relief.”

Per the federal mandate enforced by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), face masks are still required on all transit vehicles.
