Two teenagers rescued after falling through ice in Avondale Lake

Northern Lakes and Coeur d'Alene Fire and Rescue teams, and the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office responded.

Hayden Lake, ID – Officials received a call reporting two teenagers who had fallen through the ice on Avondale Lake on Saturday afternoon.

Northern Lakes and Coeur d’Alene Fire and Rescue teams, and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded.

The teenagers had broken through the ice several hundred yards away from shore, officials said. One had crawled up onto the ice and was attempting to hold up the other teenager, who was clinging to the ice.

Officials said dive and rescue team members immediately deployed, fought through thin ice covered in slush to reach the two teens and pulled them to shore.

Community members also assisted in helping pull the two to shore, officials said.

Officials said both teens were transported to Kootenai Health with several hypothermia and medical issues from submersion in the water. Their families have been contacted.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office reminded everyone that ice on local lakes is becoming dangerously thin and fragile with increasing temperatures, and to always wear a personal flotation device when enjoying time near the water.
