AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. – Contaminants have been found in Airway Heights ground water, but a local environmental health specialist said residents shouldn’t experience any affects to their health right away.

Mike Lascuola works in the Spokane Regional Health District and said the biggest concern with PFOA and PFOS chemicals is they can effect developing fetuses if the compounds are consumed over a long period of time.

Lascuola added that health issues associated with these chemical compounds are most commonly found in people who work around very high concentrations. Some household products also contain these chemicals. Food packaging, coating on pots and pans, shampoo, dental floss, nail polish, and eye makeup just to name a few.

“We’re not dealing with high concentrated levels. We’re dealing with parts per trillion. We’re dealing with a health advisory that is just making a strong effort to be protective of public health,” explained Lascuola.

It is still unknown how long the water in Airway Heights has been contaminated by these chemicals, however, Lascuola said it will take a few years to flush them out of your system but he does add that it is not fatal.
