SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Spokane Valley Fire Department responded to a structure fire on E 4th in Spokane Valley early Tuesday morning.

Fire units at the scene reported heavy smoke and fire coming out of the door and windows at the front of the building. Two adult females escaped without injury. SVFD reports one dog died at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire department officials said there were no working fire detectors in the residence.

Spokane Valley Fire Department wants to remind people that working smoke alarms save lives. SVFD officials said smoke detector batteries should be replaced every six months and smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
