SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police have taken a suspect into custody following an hours-long standoff on Spokane's lower South Hill.

Police responded to the area of West 17th and Cedar Street around 9:00 a.m. Authorities said the suspect barricaded himself in his home.

Around 2:00 p.m., the 34-year-old Steven G. Serpa. He was taken into custody, after a police K-9 found him hiding in the rafters of the home.

Police charged Serpa with second degree assault and unlawful imprisonment.

SPD said later they believed Serpa was under the influence of drugs.

Spokane Police had asked people to avoid the area, but said there was no threat to the public, and announced the roads were reopened just before 4 p.m.

An assault victim cooperated with police.

SPD officials said the suspect has been arrested at least once before.
