SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Police reopened the area of North Perry Street and North Foothills early Monday morning following an officer involved shooting Sunday evening.
Spokane Police Chief Craig Meidl said around 6:00 p.m. Sunday, authorities received a call about a reckless driver. One caller reported that the driver had almost struck his vehicle. Meidl said officers caught up with the vehicle and there was a very short pursuit.
Then, the driver got out of the car and ran from police, according to Meidl. Witnesses had reported that the man was wearing a hospital gown. One officer reported that the man was armed with a knife and had started to go after neighbors. Authorities said officers were able to stop the man near Dalton and Perry. Officers on scene asked for medics to respond and reported the male was stabbing himself.
Officers first attempted to establish verbal communication with the man and one officer was able to deploy his taser, but it was ineffective. Meidl said officers fired their weapons seconds after trying to tase him. As of a10:30 p.m. on Sunday, the man was in surgery but stable condition.
Officials said the man was shot multiple times by multiple officers. Meidl could not say how many officers fired their weapons but said four or five officers responded to the call. Meidl said they will be reviewing body cam video to get more answers.
The investigation will now be turned over to the Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team. Meidl said they will release the name of the man who was shot.
Meidl said this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no outstanding threat to the public.
