Shopko closing all Spokane County stores in 2019

The Shopko located on Newport Highway is expected to close by May 5 while the location on East Sprague Avenue is expected to close nearly a week later.

SPOKANE, Wash. — Shopko recently announced it would close its remaining Spokane stores in 2019.

The Shopko located on Newport Highway is expected to close by May 5 while the location on East Sprague Avenue in Spokane Valley is expected to close nearly a week later on May 12.

These locations join one on Spokane's South Hill and another in Pullman that are set to close. The location on Regal Street in Spokane will close Mar. 2.

In December, Shopko spokeswoman Michelle Hansen told KREM's Minnesota sister station KARE 11 that each store employs 10 to 25 employees, putting the scope of job cuts at about 400 to nearly 1,000 positions.

Two stores in Yakima and Lacey, Washington, are also closing.

According to the Associated Press, Shopko Stores has filed for bankruptcy protection.

The company says excessive debt and ongoing competitive pressure are forcing it to seek protection from creditors. Shopko is reporting assets of less than $1 billion and liabilities of between $1 billion and $10 billion.

Shopko says it plans to continue operating through Chapter 11 reorganization after securing $480 million in financing from a group of lenders led by Wells Fargo Bank. The financing will allow Shopko to continue to pay employees, vendors and suppliers.
