SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. – A suspect is in custody after allegedly lighting a hotel room on fire and charging at deputies with a knife at the Motel 6 in Spokane Valley.
Crews responded to reports of a fire at the hotel near North Hutchinson Road early Wednesday morning.
The fire started in the suspect's room, but fire officials do not know how the fire ignited. The suspect then barricaded himself in the room and told responding deputies they would have to come in and get him.
"He barricaded himself, would not come out, told deputies they would have to shoot him. He had a knife and deputies tried to negotiate with him," said Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich.
Deputies made contact with the suspect, who then charged at deputies with a knife. Deputies then fired shots, which struck the victim. The male was transported to an area hospital where he was undergoing surgery for his wounds.
Knezovich said the incident was likely one of suicide by cop.

"It's just another example of a failed mental health situation in the state of Washington," said Knezovich.
Crews from the Sheriff's Office and Spokane Valley Fire Department will remain on scene as they continue to investigate.
