Parkland, Florida student to attend rally in Spokane during walkouts

"No Kids Left Spokane" is not a group they said, it is a movement. Organized by students, for students, the idea is not only to walk out of classrooms at 10:00 am but to gather Downtown for a central rally.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Local plans are growing for Friday’s nationwide school walkout day.

"No Kids Left Spokane" is not a group they said, it is a movement. Organized by students, for students, the idea is not only to walk out of classrooms at 10:00 am but to gather Downtown for a central rally. On Friday at noon, at the Tribal Gathering Place, the teens will set the stage for a conversation about gun laws.

A second rally is planned for later in the day not by students, but teachers. Right now, educators from all over the state of Washington are gathering at the Convention Center for the union's biggest meeting of the year.

“We want to encourage our students to raise their voices and their constitutional right to be engaged with the discourse,” said teacher Shannon McCann.

More than 1,200 educators with the Washington Education Association will host "A Rally to Support Our Students" Friday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Downtown.

“We actually have a student from Parkland, Florida who is coming up to share some words and some thoughts,” McCann said.

Students from our own community, including Freeman High School, will stand beside Parkland student, Kai Keorber, and lead the rally.

“We didn't ask to be the leaders of this movement because we were honestly surprised this hasn't started earlier. We identify with the rest of the students that have gone through the situation and know how it feels to be put in their position,” Keorber said.

Educators said they want students to know they are fully supported in their journey to change.
