UPDATE: The Spokane County Medical Examiner has identified 59-year-old Danette Kane as the victim who was killed.

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Spokane Police said it is searching for a suspect who shot two people on West 10th Avenue, leaving one woman dead and a man in critical condition.

The suspect ran away from the scene. Police have most of the area on West 10th Avenue blocked off. Helicopters and K-9s are in the area helping with the search. Police said the suspect is armed and dangerous.

"The person is dangerous right now, they have shot two people, we do not know what their state of mind is or what they could do," said Spokane Police PIO John O'Brien.

"It's scary because I thought this only happened in other neighborhoods, not mine." said Shirley Wilson, a resident in the area. Wilson said she has lived in the area since 1970. "It's mostly pretty quiet around here."

Police are telling residents to stay inside while they search for the suspect. Police said they do not know how the shooting started. They are currently searching for a woman who is believed to be African-American and between the ages of 25 and 35. Officials said they did not have a description of what the suspect was believed to be wearing.

Witnesses describe hearing a total of four shots. When police arrived at the scene around 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, they found a woman dead in an apartment stairwell and man injured after being shot in the head. Police said the man is in critical condition.

"There are people I really care about in that building," said Jeremy Logan, a resident in the area.

Police said they did not know if or how the suspect and victims knew each other. Detectives from the SPD Major Crimes unit will be on the scene, and some roads in the area were closed just after 6 p.m.

Major Crimes detectives have taken over the investigation into the shooting. If you have any information, you are asked to call Crime Check at 509-456-2233 or 911.
