Man acquitted in Spokane toddler's death gets 10.5 years in prison on drug charges

Jason Obermiller, 34, pleaded guilty to distributing and conspiring to distribute 50 grams of meth and admitting to violations of court supervision in April 2018.

SPOKANE, Wash. – The man who was acquitted for the murder of a 2-year-old girl was sentenced Wednesday to 10.5 years in prison on drugs charges.

Jason Obermiller, 34, pleaded guilty to distributing and conspiring to distribute 50 grams of meth and admitting to violations of court supervision in April 2018.

The judge sentenced Obermiller to a 90-month term in prison, to be followed by an 8-year term of court supervision after he is released from federal prison. The judge also imposed a 36-month prison sentence, to run consecutive to the sentence imposed in the drug case, for violating court supervision stemming from another conviction for bank fraud conspiracy. Obermiller’s sentence will run consecutive to the 33-month state term of incarceration he is currently serving.

Obermiller was accused of killing his ex-girlfirend’s 2-year-old daughter Adalynn (Addy) Hoyt at a home on Spokane’s South Hill in September 2016. Addy’s mother, Lovina Rainey told detectives she had left the girl in the care of Obermiller while she went out to party. Addy died from blunt force trauma to her stomach, according to the Medical Examiner’s Office. He was taken into custody after several days on the run, when he was located at a lake cabin near Worley. A jury found him not guilty of second degree murder in connection to Hoyt’s death.
