SPOKANE, Wash --- The suspect in a North Spokane standoff was taken into custody around 12:40 a.m. Thursday.

Spokane Police were called to the area of East Sanson Avenue and North Nevada Street for reports of an armed suspect Wednesday evening.

The suspect was identified as 35-year-old Derrick Bonato. Spokane police say he is a convicted felon.

According to SPD, Bonnato pointed a rifle at his roommate, who left the home and called police.

When officers arrived, Bonato refused to leave. And they learned several people were inside with him, along with weapons.

Police asked nearby neighbors to evacuate or shelter in place. Eventually a SWAT team and Hostage Negotiation Team showed up to help.

More than five hours into the standoff, a woman left the home safely. About an hour after that, two men walked outside.

Finally, more than seven hours after the standoff began, the SWAT team went into the home, found Bonato, and arrested him without incident.

Police say Bonato has three felony convictions, along with a conviction for violation of a domestic violence order.

He was booked into the Spokane County jail and will likely face more charges.
