SPOKANE, Wash. --- Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Services rescued 15 cats from a home off 4322 E. 14th Ave. in Spokane Valley.

SCRAPS received a complaint from the Spokane Fire Department about possible abandoned animals in a home in Spokane.

The owner had been hospitalized and there was no one around to take care of the cats.

A SCRAPS Animal Protection Officer went to the location and posted a 36-hour notice at the home.

An animal protection officer talked to a neighbor near the home, who said they were providing short term care for the animals.

SCRAPS contacted the owner in the hospital, but the owner said she did not have a long term plan for all the animals.

On Thursday, SCRAPS got a search warrant to search the home.

The animal protection officers said the home was unsanitary due to the large amount of cat feces and urine inside the house.

SCRAPS officers wore Tyvek suits and respirators while in the home.

SCRAPS removed a total of 15 cats from the home and brought them to a local veterinarian to be evaluated.

All of the cats will go to SCRAPS.

As of right now, the animals are not available for adoption.

The investigation is ongoing and SCRAPS is working with the owner of the animals.
