COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho – The former Spirit Lake police chief has been arrested and charged with a felony.

Patrick Lawless is charged with felony aggravated battery and second degree stalking. Lawless resigned as police chief in 2012 in the wake of a sexual assault allegation. He was also accused of child abuse but no charges were filed in either case.

Court documents said Lawless rammed his truck into Adam Bowers’ car on Wednesday. Bowers is Lawless’ ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, according to court records.

Court documents said Lawless' ex-girlfriend was meeting Bowers to look at a home they might buy. According to court documents, after Lawless drove by them yelling threats, he made a U-turn and rammed his truck into their vehicles. Lawless's pregnant ex-girlfriend was in her own vehicle at the time and court documents said she drove away once she saw Lawless turn around.

Lawless's ex-girlfriend told police Lawless has been following her everywhere she goes and seems to be stalking her. She also told police, prior to ramming into the vehicles, Lawless shouted threats out his window saying, "I'm going to kill you."

Lawless made his initial appearance on these charges Thursday with his bond set at $50,000 and issued a no contact order. Then, Lawless appeared in court again Friday for a "domestic violence inflicting traumatic injury" charge. On this charge, court documents said Lawless allegedly bit his ex-girlfriend.

If Lawless posts bail, conditions of his release include wearing a tracking device and he cannot return to the resident he currently shares with his ex-girlfriend without notifying law enforcement. Court documents said Lawless' ex-girlfriend is living with him until she finds a new place with her new boyfriend. She is also pregnant with Lawless's child.
